Autobiography

In the second

grade, he stood

on a chair making declarations.

He was young (seven);

he was bolder then.

Some thought he was destined

to be a preacher man.

(Children, you know,

are smarter younger.)

In the third

grade, he sat

dumb — mute, quiet, & shy.

What happened that summer

that made the boy dumber?
